Transportation
Szeged is located on the south part of Hungary 10 km far from the border of Hungary and Serbia and 170 km far from Budapest. From Budapest, Szeged can be reached either by car or by train.
By plane:
Hungary's international airport is easy to reach from any point on the globe. The international airport of Hungary, Budapest Ferihegy Airport has two terminals roughly 28 kilometres from the city center. Unless you rent a car and drive directly to Szeged, take a train at Ferihegy Terminal 1 (see below).
The air Traffic and Airport Administration operates an Airport Minibus Service (Tel: +36 (1) 296-8555), which takes passengers from the airport to any address in Budapest (among them to any railway station) and picks them up at any point of Budapest (e.g. at any Hotels). Regular mass transit bus is also available at the airport (No. 200), which takes passengers from the airport (Terminal 1 and 2) to the station Kőbánya-Kispest of the Metro line 3. Changing to the Metro there, the city center and the main railway stations can be reached easily. A taxi from the airport to the city center costs approximately 4200 HUF (17 EUR).
By train:
Budapest has three large international railway stations: Eastern (Keleti), Western (Nyugati) and Southern (Déli). They are well linked to the public transport. One can commute between the railway stations by metro (http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/bud/budapest.htm or http://www.budapesthotels.com/systempages/metro.asp). Taking an Intercity train is the fastest way to get to major towns from Budapest. Trains to Szeged leave frequently from the Nyugati Railway Station located downtown in Budapest. Check the timetable. If you arrive by plane you can take the train at Ferihegy Terminal 1. There is a small station there and all trains to Szeged do stop at this station. If you arrive to Ferihegy Terminal 2, you can reach the Railway stop "Ferihegy" by taking the local transport bus (No. 200) or by taking a taxi. To get there takes about 10-15 minutes. At the "Ferihegy station" two platforms have been built which are connected with a pedestrian footbridge equipped with lifts above the clearway. A short pedestrian path of just 200 meters connects the railway station with Terminal 1 (click here to see a picture). Tickets can be bought at Tourinform at Ferihegy Terminal 1 from 09.00 to 22.00. Outside opening hours, tickets can be bought from the conductors on the trains. In the city you can buy tickets at the railway ticket offices.
By coach:
Volánbusz Rt., being a member of Eurolines, operates scheduled services to several countries (e.g. Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine).
By car:
In terms of documents, you only need a valid driving licence, registration document and a country sticker to enter Hungary. The use of dimmed headlights is compulsory for motorcyclists at all times, while for passenger cars only outside built-up areas. The use of seat belts is compulsory for front and back seat passengers at all times, inside and outside built-up areas. To use motorways in Hungary, you need a motorway sticker. Motorway sticker can be purchased at border crossings and petrol stations.
Local transportation in Szeged:
Public transport in Szeged consists of trams, trolleys and buses. Tickets are valid for any of the three types of transportation and can be purchased in advance or at the driver (250 HUF, at present). Tickets can be bought in front of the Szeged Railway Station in a special boot and numerous places downtown in similar boots.
