Bacteriorhodopsin - the movie
The light driven transmembrane proton pump Bacteriorhodopsin is an excellent model system for a number of problems in
biological physics: protein dynamics, structure-function relationship of proteins, conversion of light energy into the
electrochemical energy of the proton concentration difference across the cell membrane. In addition, it has several
exceptional properties that make it an important candidate for optoelectronic applications.
Watch our movie introducing bacteriorhodopsin: The archae Halobacterium salinarum, the scheme of the energy cycle,
the areas of the cell membranes that contain Bacteriorhorhodopsin called purple membranes, the chromoprotein
Bacteriorhodopsin, its structure and function. Click on the image to play movie (34 MB).
